Letter Home and Supplies

Dear Fourth Graders,

I hope you are having a fun-filled summer. I’ve been spending my summer going to the beach and the lake with family and friends, berry picking with my kids, reading and much more. I’m excited to share some new STEM projects and books with you this year!

With the start of school approaching, I wanted to send out a letter to help you prepare for fourth grade. Below you will find a list of supplies to bring to school in September.

Supplies

  • 3 composition notebooks

  • 2 1-subject spiral notebooks

  • 1 hardcover 2” binder with pocket in the inside

  • 1 package of wide-ruled loose leaf paper

  • 2 packs of pencils

  • 2 whiteboard markers

  • A pack of colored pencils

  • Scissors

  • 4 glue sticks

  • Earbuds or headphones

You will have your own cubby located in the classroom for large items, a caddy for supplies and an unlocked locker in the hallway for your personal items. You will be keeping both a Reader’s and Writer’s Notebook over the course of the year.  You will use these notebooks to jot down lists of writing topics, write drafts, respond to reading and much more.  A composition notebook will be used in science class as a science journal. Another composition will be used for an interactive notebook for social studies. The third will be used for a family journal.

Our first day of school is on Tuesday, September 5th.  4th graders will be the only students in the building.  There will be several adults to help you find your way around Shapleigh!

Enjoy the rest of your summer and I look forward to teaching you this year!   Please feel free to email me with any questions you may have at kgilpatrick@kitteryschools.com .

Your fourth grade teacher,

Mrs. Gilpatrick

Dear Future Fourth Grader,

We are so excited to have you join us at Shapleigh in the fall! We are hoping that you have lots of summer fun planned, along with plenty of reading. Over the summer, we would like you to write your teacher a postcard about a book that you read during the summer months. We encourage you to describe the book you have read, and why you enjoyed reading it. We are looking forward to getting to know you as a reader and this will be a wonderful first step!

You can mail the postcard to Shapleigh at 43 Stevenson Road, Kittery, ME 03904. You can also bring your postcard on the first day of school. We will be doing a fun activity with the postcards! Your postcard can be from a trip you take over the summer, near or far. (Fort Foster is a fantastic summer trip too!) You could also create your own postcard to go with your book.

Happy reading!

The Fourth Grade Team
